The Holidays are upon us!  Even though it’s early November, time will certainly fly right into and through the Holiday Season, as it does each year.  As we watch the leaves turn color and fall from the trees, and as the winemakers wind up this year’s grape harvest, we have a little time to plan for the next couple of months.

At the Gold Vine Grill, we have 2 new things going on.  Many of you have tried our “Thirsty Thursdays”, when we offer 2 varietals of red wine and 2 varietals of white wine for just $5.00.  This is offered every Thursday.  Also, Sunday evenings, we now offer live original acoustic music from Tamra Godey from 5PM-7PM.  Sundays are also “Corkage Free” Nights, so that’s a double whammy great time!

The new menu has lots of fans eating some of Chef Greg’s latest creations.  If you haven’t been in yet to try the Chile Relleno del Mar (with Shrimp & Crab), served w/ Tomatillo Salsa, you’d better get on over pretty soon!  The Mahi Mahi Street Tacos are also a hit.  There are quite a few new items on this menu, and reviews have been very favorable.

While you are making plans for the holidays, remember that Gold Vine Grill is in the Catering business again.  So if you want to bring an office party in for lunch or dinner, we’ll be happy to acommodate you.  We will open for a lunch group for groups of 12 or more on the days that we are normally closed.  We will also be happy to cater a holiday dinner at your business or home.  Please call us well in advance, and let us help make your holiday party the best!

Gold Vine Grill is turning 14 years old this month.  Can you believe it?  It is hard to believe we have been here that long.  It has definitely been a long and winding road, and we are thrilled to be here as your neighbors and friends.  We opened on November 29th of 2003.  We’ve watched many of you raise your small children to become great young adults.  Be sure to come around this month and help us to keep on going to 15 years!

Since our 15th Annual Downtown Somerset Holiday Open House is so early in December, I think we should get the word out now!  We will open our doors to all of you on Sunday, Dec. 3rd from 2:00-4:30.  Local winemakers will offer their wines complimentary during that time, and we’ll have some great appetizers and desserts on a  buffet for your enjoyment.  With live music, and singing Holiday favorite songs, it is always a great time.  We definitely want to see you all there!

Also, it’s never too early to make reservations for our New Year’s Eve Gala Dinner.  We serve a 5-Course Wine Paired dinner…tables are formally set, and the evening is always great fun.  We have 2 seatings available:  5:00 and 8:30.  This is a pre set menu, with each course paired with a lovely wine.  Per person cost will include all food, wine, tax & gratuity.  We are already getting booked, so don’t wait until the last minute..,call soon for your reservation.  Wine bar seats also available.

It’s Harvest Season in the Wine Country, and the Grapes are comin’ off the vine.  What will this vintage bring us??  We’ll have to remember a few years down the line when the reds are being released what a wet winter & hot summer we had this year, and how those weather extremes may affect the wine. 

 I just returned from 4 days in Cambria, where we usually have an annual get-together with my siblings.  September is almost always some of the best weather of the year on the Central Coast, and this year lived up to the expectations!  If you’ve never been there, and appreciate a lot of artisitic energy, gorgeous ocean views on a rugged coastline, great hiking trails, biking trails and/or just peaceful times by the sea, I highly recommend the Cambria area.  It is just 24 miles west of Paso Robles on the beautiful Hwy 1, just a few miles south of San Simeon. 

 We are literally days away from releasing our new Dinner Menu.  I’m waiting for Greg to get the last few food items in, and to get the new menu covers, and we will be offering our new delicioius dishes.  Of course, we don’t change the entire menu, as we know this might cause a local panic (especially where Calamari Dore and Ginger Shrimp Ravioli are concerned), but please do realize that when we put new items on the menu, some other items come off.  So, What’s New?  Well, for starters, we are joining w/ Olivier’s Butcher Shop to offer you some great meat selections.  We have tried a few of the new menu items out as specials, and they have been very well received.  We’ve had to tweak a couple of things to make them just right, so we feel pretty confident with our new items.  As far as small plates go, we will be offering Mahi Mahi Street Tacos, Chile Rellano Del Mar (with Crab & Shrimp), & Margherita Flatbread.   

New Dinner items will include a 14 oz. Dri-aged grass-fed Rib-Eye Steak, served w/ Chef Greg’s house made steak sauce on the side. (you can always request the Cabernet Mushroom Demi Glaze if you’d like.)  Somerset Broil, w/ a Sauce Diablo…an old “fave” with a new twist…Mediterranean Chicken Roulade, breaded and filled w/ Fennel, Leek and Olive Tepenade…Chicken Saltimbocca…Portobella Stack and a Gnocci w/ Walnut Pesto.  Please come in soon and try our great new items!  We should be on board by Friday, October 6th. 

Have you been coming in on Sunday evenings for dinner and enjoyed our new live acousic music?  Tamra Godey is with us from 5:30-7:30 on Sunday evenings playing original acoustic tunes for your listening pleasure.  It’s also corkage free night!  Please note**when the time changes, music will be featured from 5  to 7 PM.  

On Wednesday, October 18th, we will be pairing up with Paul from Madrona Vineyards for our monthly “12 @ 6” dinner.  This is a 4-course Wine paired meal for just $55.00 per person, with tax & gratuity included.  This will be the last “12 @ 6” of the season, so please make reservations soon!   

Come in and try our new  “Thirsty Thursdays”, when we offer four different wines for just $5.00 per glass.  This is a great way to check out some local wines that you may not be familiar with.  Meanwhile, remember that we still have our Happy Hour at the Wine Bar every day from 3-6 PM, where you can purcase a small plate for the menu price, and add a flight of 4 wines for just $5.00.

Remember 5 or 6 months ago when we prayed for the rain to stop?   That sort of seems like a distant memory now, and I think we would all be grateful for a little rain.  We are very happy to welcome the month of August, as July got a bit challenging in more ways than one!  Let’s see…about 3 weeks ago, our a/c system at the Grill suddenly stopped working, and we were going into a 104-105 degree weekend!  It took about 10 days to get it serviced, as many a/c techs are swamped.  So, finally we got it repaired, and 2 days later, it went out again, and what else?  Oh yeah, the well went out too, so we had no water!  Well, it’s all better now, and we have a break in the weather, so let’s hope for the best!

I want to express our sincere gratitude to all of our customers who stayed with us during the challenging days of no a/c.  You are wonderful people, and we really appreciate you…and a special thanks to Kelley & Jeff, Scot & Janet and Jim & Sandy who just came to us offering portable a/c’s and fans.   We made it through because of you.  That’s what this community is all about, isn’t it?

We are really looking forward to our “12 @ 6” dinner this month.  Normally we have them on the third  Wednesday of the month, but this month we have to change the timing to a bit later in the month.  We will be teaming up with John & Cindy Miller from MV Vineyards.  John has some of the best wines around, and some impressive award winners, so this dinner is sure to be one of the best!  This is a 4-Course wine paired meal.  The cost is $55.00 per person, inclusive of tax and gratuity.  Call for reservations soon, as this is sure to be a sell-out. 626-4042

Wine Watch:  We have been serving Pinot Noir from E-16 Wine Company for a few years now, and are thrilled that Robert Jones has now opened a new beautiful tasting room in Fair Play.  The tasting room is located on the property formerly occupied by the Winery by the Creek.  Robert has completely remodeled the interior,  and it is impressive.  It’s cool, it’s classy and it’s comfortable.  Get on over there & find out for yourselves!

Remember that we feature the original tunes of Tamra Godey on Sunday eventings at the Gold Vine from 5:30 – 7:30.  Tamra has a golden voice and plays the acoustic guitar beautifully.

There is a new pizza place in the area, located on the corner of Buck’s Bar & Pleasant Valley Road.  Greg & I went last Sunday, and enjoyed the outdoor patio dining w/ Tina & Randy from Saluti Cellars.  We chatted w/ the owner for a while at the end of the evening.  He’s put so much heart & soul into that Little Italian Place, and is working so hard to make it just right.  Many of you know that the next day, someone broke in and took some register equipment from there, and I’m not exactly sure of anything else, but it caused them to close only a little after a week of opening.  Hopefully, the chump that broke in will be caught, if he hasn’t already been.  But the reason I’m mentioning this is that I think it would be good if we all showed our support to this young family man who is just trying to make a living and add something enjoyable to our community.  So, maybe the next time you drive by..stop in and make a purchase, or meet some friends there, or take a meal home.  We all need to support each other out here.

Wednesday, July 19th, we will be joining up with Sierra Vista Winery for our “12 @ 6” Wine Paired Dinner.  This dinner is a four course wine-paired meal.  Cost of the meal is just $55.00 per person.  Seating is limited to 12 people, and reservations are required, so make your reservations soon!

If you haven’t yet made it over to the Red Poets Tasting Patio for one of the “Friday Night Wine Downs”,  be sure to get on over and check it out!  Every Friday during the summer months, Gold Vine Grill is teaming up with Charlie & Renee, owners of Red Poets to offer a relaxing evening on their tasting patio, with food, wine and live music from 5 PM until 7:30 PM.  Charlie & Renee have reduced the prices of their outstanding wines appreciably for these events, so don’t miss the opportunity to get in on the fun!

Wine Watch:

We have recently begun to serve Sentivo Vineyard’s Sparkling Brut by the glass or by the bottle at the Gold Vine Grill.  Who doesn’t enjoy a little bubbly on a hot summer day?  This sparkling wine is made from premium Sonoma county grapes in the Methode Champenoise.  It offers hints of pear & citrus…perfect for sipping on any day.  And now you can get it at Gold Vine Grill…ahhh…the good life!

Music is back at Gold Vine Grill every Sunday evening from 5:30-7:30.  Tamra Godey is co-ordinating the artists, and we  think you’ll enjoy relaxing and listening to some great acoustic tunes while enjoying your dinner.  Remember, Sundays are also “corkage free”, so grab a bottle and make it to the Gold Vine on Sundays.

Well, before we get into what’s going on in June, let me say “whew”!  Between Mother’s Day, Memorial Day Weekend, and Chef Greg’s 60th Birthday all happening in 2 weeks time, I have to say, it was all fun good and busy.  We had a fabulous month of business in May, which of course is just what we always want! As the saying goes “when you’re busy…you’re busy”  held true, and this week is a week to catch our breath and get ready for summer.

If you haven’t come to the Friday Night Wine Down by the Fire event at Red Poets Tasting Room Patio, you really need to get on over to share in the community gathering with great wines by Red Poets, great food from the Gold Vine, and great music by local musicians!  I’m telling you, this is a really good way to spend a Friday evening.  Charlie & Renee (owners of Red Poets) could tell from the first gathering that more seating and some umbrellas would be needed for the summer, and that is now done!  The event is from 5-7:30 on Friday evenings.  The address is 5951 Mount Aukum Rd. Caesar Salad Dressing                             Yield: 1 Qt.

Ingredients:                                                   Amount:

Mix Together:

Egg yolks, beaten                                          3

Warm water                                                  2 oz.

Add & Mix Well:

Dijon mustard                                               2 tsp

Garlic, minced                                              1/3 Cup

Anchovy, minced                                          2 Can

Worchesershire                                             3 Tbsp

Tobasco                                                          2 tsp

Lemon juice                                                   1 oz.

Salt, kosher                                                    1 Tbsp

Black Pepper, table grind                            1 tsp

 Canola oil                                                      4 Cups

Olive oil blend                                               2 Cups

Red wine vinegar                                          ¾ Cup

Grated parmesan cheese                              ¾ Cup


With  mixer running at med/med high speed:Add oils extra slowly to start, then in a slow streamIncorporate vinegar at intervals, then finish with parmesan cheese

Oh what an absolute pleasure to experience the warmth of Spring…the longer days…the wildflowers popping up to bring us a smile…it’s all GREAT!  Maybe you can’t tell from my blogs, but I’m not a huge fan of cold, wet weather, short daylight days and the need for heavy clothing at almost all times.  I’m a Spring and Summer girl, and my heart just jumps for joy when Spring gets here.  I think most of us were ready for the winter to be over this year.  Spring always reminds me of a time of rejuvenation, of joy and hope.  It’s a wonderful time to look forward to what we will plant in our vegetable gardens, what improvements we will do to our homes, and maybe even what kind of summer get-a-way we might plan with friends and/or family.  And with the longer days, of course, it’s the perfect time to make a little jaunt up to Somerset and visit us at the Gold Vine Grill!

We will be celebrating Easter Sunday this year on April 16th by adding a lovely brunch menu on to our regular luncheon menu.  Greg really makes great Eggs Benedict, Eggs Florentine, Chicken & Mushroom Crepes, Seafood Vol au Vent, Grilled Salmon Filet and more!  We will serve house made breakfast potatoes and fresh fruit w/ brunch, and of course mimosas will be available!  We will also be serving from our regular lunch menu, so whether you want to have a quick lunch on your way to wine tasting, or you want to linger over a relaxing brunch, we will be able to serve you!  Brunch will be served from 10:30 AM – 3:00 PM

We can’t forget that this is the time of year when many of the wineries of El Dorado County open their doors with great wines, live music and fun foods for Passport Weekends.  This year the weekends are at the end of April, so let’s all hope for good weather for BOTH weekends!  The events will be held on April 22nd & 23rd, and then again on April 29th & 30th.  For ticket purchase and more information, check out the website at www.passporteldorado.com

Wine Watch:      

Perhaps you have noticed that there’s action going on in the Fair Play area…specifically in the area of the Winery by the Creek and the Pub at Fair Play.  Well, there’s a new guy in town, who, is actually not so new!  Have you met Robert Jones yet?  Have you tasted his wines?  Some of you “old timers” might remember a tasting room called “Firefall”, which was located right around the corner from Gold Vine Grill, where currently the “Red Poet” tasting room is located.  Robert left the area but retained his local vineyards.  Robert’s grapes come from many premier wine growing regions in California.  Robert returned to the area a while ago, with the intention of re-settling here, getting a tasting room opened and being a local!  Just about then, area celebrity wine maker Charles Mitchell was selling his property in Fair Play, including the property that the Winery by the Creek was located on, as well as the Pub at Fair Play property.  Robert scooped up both, and should be opening his tasting room doors any day!  The restaurant is still being run by the current owners, but Robert and his team are bringing something new (er) to our beautiful Somerset/Fair Play area.   Robert’s E-16 Pinot Noir is currently proudly being served at the Gold Vine Grill.  Make sure you get in to try it soon!

Chef Greg’s Recipe Corner:

Macaroni & Cheese w/ Jalapeño & Applewood Smoked Bacon

Yield:  1 Serving

Ingredient                                                                       Amount

Dried Macaroni Elbows                                            1.5 – 2 Cups

White Wine Sauce                                                        8 oz.

Chicken Stock                                                                1 oz.

Heavy Cream                                                                  1 oz.

Cheddar Cheese                                                            4-5 oz. grated

Jalapeno (roasted, chopped)                                   1 Tbsp                 

Applewood Smoked Bacon (chopped)                 1 Slice

Salt & Pepper                                                                    to taste


Pre-cook macaroni elbows as directed on package

Heat white wine sauce, chicken stock & cream until barely boiling.  Reduce heat slightly to thicken a bit.  Add bacon & cheese and stir while cheese melts.  Reduce to med-low.  Add cooked macaroni, then jalapeño & bacon.  Finish w/ toasted bread crumbs or toasted panko if desired.

Is it Spring Yet?

Wow!  What a winter we have had!  We have lived here since 1999, and I cannot remember a colder, wetter winter than we have had this year.  I’m the type of person who just barely tolerates winter, with great hopes of getting on with the rest of the seasons as soon as possible, so this year has been brutal for me.  And unfortunately, the freezing temps and tons of rain have hurt our business.  Thanks to all of you who faithfully came out to eat at the Gold Vine Grill this winter.  For those of you who just couldn’t go out, come on over as soon as things dry and thaw out.

One result of the tremendous rainfall we have had this winter has been a lot of damage to our local roads.  In particular, we have lost access to Mount Aukum Road as it heads toward Pleasant Valley.  That road has suffered significant damages, and estimates are that it will not re-open until some time in May.  So, if you are travelling from the Sacramento area, you can come into the Fair Play area via Buck’s Bar or via E-16 from the Plymouth area.  If you are coming over Hwy 50 from Tahoe, and you use the Pollack Pines exit to get to this area, keep travelling on Pleasant Valley Road until you get to the Buck’s Bar stop sign, and then turn left, and go about 6 or 7 miles to the 4-way stop.  If you live in Pleasant Valley, Pollack Pines or Camino, you can turn left onto Mount Aukum Road and take a left onto the Happy Valley Cut-off road.  This is the quickest way to get here from those areas…however the road is narrow, windy and steep, and not everyone knows how to drive slowly.  Otherwise, you’ll need to also take Pleasant Valley Road toward Placerville and turn left onto Buck’s Bar.  It’s a minor inconvenience, but as the weather gets better and the days get longer, just think of it as a scenic drive!

For those of us in the Fair Play and Grizzly Flat areas, we have been cut off from the convenience of going to Holiday Market and all of the businesses in the Pleasant Valley Center.  Those businesses are hurting too, so if you don’t want to use the Happy Valley Cut-off road, think about taking the long way around once in a while and do some shopping there.  We are all going to be inconvenienced by this, but as the old saying goes “it is what it is”.

Now, on to good news….Our Valentine’s Day Winemaker Dinner was a really great time again this year!  Many thanks to Sherrie & Elliott Graham from Busby Cellars, who join us in making this dinner possible every year.  They opened their tasting room the same year that we opened the Gold Vine Grill, and it has been a great tradition to pair Chef Greg’s food with their wines for a lovely Valentine’s evening each year.  Here are a few pics:

In the wine news, we are happy to tell you that we have added a couple of new local wines to our wine list.  We now feature MV Syrah.  Any of you who have had this wine know that the MV wines are really great, and the Syrah is always my personal favorite! MV is run by John & Cindy Miller.  Their tasting room is on Fair Play Road, just across the street from Toogood.  We also are happy to welcome the Petite Syrah from Sentivo Vineyards.  Sentivo is relatively new to the tasting room scene in Fair Play.  They are located on Fair Play Road,  just across from the Pallissandro Tasting Room.  Their wines, tasting room and grounds are really impressive.  If you haven’t stopped by these tasting rooms, make it a “must do” for your next wine tasting adventure.

Many of you have been asking me for recipes, so I decided to bring back Chef Greg’s Recipe Corner.  So here goes!

Shrimp, peeled, deveined and coarse chopped          1 Pound

Egg White                                                                   1

Yellow Curry Past (Mac Ploy Brand)                                    1 tsp

Cilantro, fine chopped                                                            1 tsp

Red Bell Pepper, minced                                            1 tsp

Round Wrap/ Wonton Skins                                      1 pkg.

Egg (for wash)            beat w/ spash of water to thin           1

Cornstarch (to sprinkle over to prevent sticking)     ¼ cup +/-


Place shrimp, egg white and curry paste in food processor.  Pulse briefly to combine ingredients into a coarse paste.  *Do NOT overmix.  Remove paste to a bowl and fold in cilantro and red bell pepper.


Line sheet pan w/ parchment and sprinkle w/ cornstarch. Lay down  half of your wonton skins on a large cutting board. .  Lightly brush the entire edges of the wontons w/ egg wash.  Place approx. ½ to 1 Tablespoon of shrimp filling in center of each wonton.  Place another wonton skin on top and press the two sheets together firmly working to seal and press out any air pockets.

Place formed ravioli on the prepared sheet pan.  Do not allow ravioli to touch or overlap or they may stick together.  Finished ravioli may be frozen immediately, or they must be cooked right away.  To freeze, place entire sheet pan in freezer until they are completely frozen, then transfer to zip lock baggies for storage.  Frozen ravioli will keep for up to 30 days.
